Tiếp theo các báo cáo trước đó rằng người đỡ đầu Canonical cho Ubuntu đã xem xét thay thế bộ phần mềm văn phòng nguồn mở OpenOffice.org của Oracle, các lập trình viên Ubuntu đã khẳng định rằng rẽ nhánh cộng đồng LibreOffice sẽ được đưa vào trong Ubuntu 11.04, tên mã là “Natty Narwhal”. Theo một bài viết trên danh sách thư của Ubuntu của lập trình viên Matthias Klose, các lập trình viên đã bắt đầu rồi việc chuyển sang loại bỏ các gói lỗi thời của OpenOffice.org dựa trên phiên bản 3.2.1.

Oracle đã tung ra OpenOffice 3.3 vào giữa tháng 12, tuy nhiên, OpenOffice.org vẫn chỉ là 8 bản ứng viên khi bản 3.3.0 mới nhất được xây dựng. Klose nói rằng, trong khi các gói “dứt khoát cần một vài sự kiểm thử”, rồi chúng sẽ sẵn sàng cho việc đưa vào trong phiên bản alpha 2 của Natty Narwhal sẽ tung ra trong đầu tháng 2.

Cột mốc phát triển mới nhất của Ubuntu 11.04 là bản alpha đầu tiên từ đầu tháng 12 năm ngoái. Phiên bản cuối cùng của Natty Narwhal được mong đợi sẽ tới vào ngày 28/04/2011.

Ubuntu không là phát tán duy nhất bỏ OpenOffice.org để chọn LibreOffice. Cuối tháng trước, cột mộc thứ 5 của OpenSuSE 11.4, phiên bản chính tiếp theo của phát tán Linux này, đã thay thế bộ phần mềm văn phòng nguồn mở của Oracle bằng rẽ nhánh của cộng đồng mới.

Following previous reports that Ubuntu sponsor Canonical was looking to replace Oracle's open source OpenOffice.org office suite, the Ubuntu developers have confirmed that the LibreOffice community fork will be included in Ubuntu 11.04, code named "Natty Narwhal". According to a post on the Ubuntu mailing list by developer Matthias Klose, the developers have already started the transition of removing outdated OpenOffice.org packages based on version 3.2.1.

Oracle released OpenOffice 3.3 in mid-December, however, the OpenOffice.org still shows the eighth release candidate as the latest 3.3.0 build. Klose says that, while the packages "definitely need some testing", they should be available for inclusion in the second alpha version of Natty Narwhal coming in early February.

The latest development milestone of Ubuntu 11.04 is the first alpha release from early December of last year. The final version of Natty Narwhal is expected to arrive on 28 April 2011.

Ubuntu isn't the only distribution to drop OpenOffice.org in favour of LibreOffice. At the end of last month, the fifth milestone for openSUSE 11.4, the next major release of the popular Linux distribution, replaced Oracle's open source office suite with the new community fork.
