The rural district (Landkreis) Wittmund in northwestern Germany is using GNU/Linux to centrally manage computers usage at eleven of its schools, reports Univention, one of the open source IT companies involved in the project.

The eleven schools offer desktop computers to about six thousand pupils. The Wittmund district last summer started centralising the management of computer use and data management for all students and school staff. GNU/Linux based servers are also used to offer e-learning services, according to the announcement.

The district's use of GNU/Linux is one of the topics of the upcoming Kom Com trade fair taking place in the German city of Hannover on 9 February.

The presentation will be given the district's IT manager, Hillrich Hildebrandt.
